Visual Icons

Abstract: There is something irresistible about the idea that we perceive the world by means of images. However, the nature of iconic representation is disputed by philosophers and cognitive scientists. This talk outlines five signature properties of icons and argues that they cluster together in a class of scene-based visual processes.  The talk then outlines a deeper theory of the compositional structure of iconic representation.
